About the ChapterWomen In Defense (WID), A National Security Organization, an affiliate of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), is a professional organization for individuals whose careers are related to the defense of the United States and national security. WID provides its members with opportunities for professional development, a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences, and a vehicle for expanding networks. It also provides opportunities for members to meet and interact with officials from Government and industry in open discussions on key issues. The Iowa/Illinois was the first chapter formed outside of the National WID in 2001. Iowa/Illinois Chapter has established a scholarship program that benefits local students. In 2005 we awarded $5,500 in scholarships to deserving local students. In 2005 we also established a Networking, Education and Career Development Committee whose focus is to develop more opportunities for our members. LeadershipElected Board:

The Iowa/Illinois Chapter drew a record crowd to its 6th Annual Symposium this spring with approximately 460 in attendance. Held in Bettendorf, Iowa, the event was designed for professionals in the public and private sectors and the theme this year was, "Leadership in a Changing Workforce: Generation Differences". This great event could not have happened without all the continued support from the board members and volunteers.
In June, The Iowa/Illinois Chapter of Women In Defense hosted a dinner/reception to honor their 2007 scholarship recipients. This year, they awarded eleven scholarships to graduating high school seniors and thirteen scholarships to students continuing their education, for a total of $14,000 in scholarships.
Installation of Officers for 2005-2006 was held on 12 Oct 05. Photos below are: 1) Incoming President (second term) Nancy Toohill making remarks; 2) Installation of Officers (from left to right) Incoming Treasurer (first term) Bonnie Borden, Incoming Secretary (second term) Patty Vyncke, and Incoming President (second term) Nancy Toohill; 3) Iowa/Illinois Chapter of NDIA President Dave Emling making opening remarks for the ceremony.

WID was represented at the Women's Health Fair at the Women Veterans outpatient clinic in Bettendorf, Iowa on Saturday, 22 Oct 2005 by Terri Morrison. There were a variety of other organizations, mostly health-related there also. WID had an opportunity to listen to a presentation made by a nurse who was in Vietnam from 1966-67. She did a slide show of pictures she had taken during her time in Vietnam, and talked about her experience. During the five hour Fair, women vets from all branches of service came through, and WID was able to speak to many of them one-on-one. Passed out a lot of WID brochures. It was a wonderful networking opportunity!
The Lunch and Learn with Jay Justin (20 Oct. in the Caisson Room) went very well. Terri Morrison chaired this effort. We had a small but very attentive group. Jay explained the three types of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) programs and how they work: Community based program, one-to-one mentoring (one year commitment to spend a minimum of 10 hours a month together); school based program, one-to-one site based mentoring program during school lunches (one year commitment to spend a minimum of two hours together each month during lunch); and site based program, one-to-one site based mentoring program (six month commitment to spend minimum of one to two hours each week together after school at school). For more information you can contact Big Brothers Big Sisters at 563.323.8006 or visit their website www.qcbbbs.org.
