About the Chapter

Welcome!

The vision of the Greater Frederick Chapter of Women in Defense (WID-GFC) is to provide networking and professional development opportunities to promote the role of women in national defense and security, to support military service members, and to encourage partnerships between the local community and military bases such as Fort Detrick. Our local chapter will provide a forum for individuals in Frederick and nearby areas such as the I-270 corridor between Frederick and Rockville, the I-70 corridor between Frederick and Baltimore, and the Columbia, Maryland area. Additionally, we welcome people who are commuting from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and the Leesburg, Virginia area.

WID-GFC will feature networking activities to include:

• Business Luncheons
• Prominent Speakers
• Receptions/Dinners
• Conferences
• Charity Events/Fundraisers
• Professional Workshops
• Golf Tournaments/Clinics
• Informal Networking/Socials
• Award/Scholarship ceremonies

Chapter Goals

• Gain Visibility in Local Community
• Increase WID-GFC Membership to over 100 members
• Encourage Active Participation by All Chapter Members
• Gain Committed Corporate Sponsors
• Award first scholarships by November 2009
• Start mentoring program by 31 December 2009

The WID-GFC is your source for networking, professional development and mentoring with other women leaders in the greater Washington DC area, specifically those working in defense-related industries.

This web site is designed to keep you informed of everything that is going on with WID-GFC: events, meetings, seminars, chapter news, and more! New events are added frequently, so keep visiting.

Women In Defense (WID), A National Security Organization affiliated with NDIA, provides its members with opportunities for professional development and networking, cultivating the advancement of women leaders in government and industry professions.

Breakfast Networking Meeting

We have two very special guests who will be sharing their passions with us.  Sarah McCollum from Capital City Books LLC and Hartwood Creative (www.capitalcitybooks.com and www.hartwoodcreative.com) will be presenting “Strategies for Fostering Your Creativity”.  Have you struggled with how to make your written communications more interesting and appealing?  Learning to be more creative can enhance your personal and professional lives.  We all lead busy, interesting, and fascinating lives that are worth documenting.  Julie Gaver is an individual who took this one more step and wrote a book that has become very successful!  Julie Gaver, who has spoken previously at several WID events, is a professional speaker who provides corporate training and development programs in the local area.  She will be present to speak about her book, “Must Love Shoes”, and will sign copies that will be available for sale. (see www.mustloveshoesthebook.com and www.juliegaver.com).  This event will be held from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at the Fort Detrick Community Activities Center (Building 1520A).  Coffee and donuts/pastries will be provided.  This event is free for WID members and $20 for non-members.  Please RSVP by March 23rd to Luanne.houck@gdit.com.

Champions Billiards

Social Gathering at Champions Billiards

Please join the WID Greater Frederick Chapter for a fun evening of social networking, listening to music, and playing a friendly game of pool!  If we have enough interest, we will have a pool tournament.  This event was held several years ago and we had a great response, so come out and have some fun to help get through the longest, shortest month of the year!   There will be a nominal fee (TBD) to cover the cost of renting pool tables and providing appetizers for the evening. Please RSVP by February 8th if you are interested in attending to karen.dickman@gdit.com.

Fort Detrick Community Activities Center (Building 1520A)

Breakfast Networking Meeting

For our first event of 2011, we will host a breakfast meeting at the Fort Detrick Community Activities Center (Building 1520A).  This event will run from 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. on Friday, January 28th.  Coffee and donuts/pastries will be served from 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. and from 8:30 a.m. – 9:10 a.m. we will have Financial Advisor, Christine Koontz, providing valuable insight into the importance of good financial management for women.  She focuses her business towards women and their families--from helping women entrepreneurs grow their businesses to helping women understand finances and gain financial freedom.  She specializes in retirement income and estate planning, including charitable giving, as well as insurance issues, such as life and long term care insurance.  In addition, she also provides planning for business owners.  Get 2011 off to the right start by jump starting your financial resolutions!  At this meeting we will also confirm our officers for 2011.  This event is free for WID members and $20 for non-members.  Please RSVP by January 24th to Luanne.houck@gdit.com.
