Third WID Chapter Launched
The Chesapeake Bay Chapter has become the third local unit of Women
In Defense around the country. The chapter, headquartered in Lexington
Park, Md., near the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, already has attracted
more than 40 new members for the association. Its formation was spearheaded
by Jane Walter and Cindy Broyles, both of Booz Allen Hamilton, in Lexington
Park.
The Iowa-Illinois Chapter was formed last year at Rock Island Arsenal,
Ill. The Picatinny Chapter was established this summer at Picatinny Arsenal,
in New Jersey.
Picatinny Chapter
The following members were elected to the Picatinny board:
- President Barbara Machak, from the Tank Automotive Research, Development
and Engineering Command's Armament Research Development and Engineering
Center (TACOM-ARDEC).

Inc.

"Our programs committee is actively developing programs for the

active chapter for Women In Defense."
Iowa-Illinois Chapter
Outgoing Iowa-Illinois Chapter President Sue Crisp installed the officers
for 2002-2003. They are:
- President Mary S. Adams, from the U.S. Army Operations Support Command,
at Rock Island.

Affairs Office.

and Concepts Office.
At a recent chapter meeting, Brig. Gen. Vincent E. Boles, commander
of the Army Field Support Command at Rock Island, praised the many national-defense
contributions by women with whom he has served during his career. Boles
capped his speech by presenting submitting his application for membership
and dues to join WID.
The chapter recognized the Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year for
the Operations Support Command by giving a set of dress blues to the winner,
Staff Sgt. Robert A. Barlow.
Developing Effective Contract Proposals
WID members in Washington, DC, had a chance to learn to develop more
effective contract proposals at a Knowledge Network luncheon. Lt. Col.
Lynn O'Connell, product manager for Army information warfare, and WID
National Vice President Janice Menker, who is director of privatization
initiatives and contracts resources at Concurrent Technologies Corporation's
National Security Group, offered insights into the process.
HORIZONS Scholarship
WID's HORIZONS Foundation awarded Fall 2002 scholarships to Maria
Christina Markley and Elena Fedorova. Both attend Georgetown University,
in Washington, D.C., and will receive scholarships in the amount of $900
each. Markey majors in security studies, while Federova is focusing on
government and history.
WID established the HORIZONS Foundation to encourage women to pursue
careers related to U.S. national security interests and to provide development
opportunities to women who already are working in national security fields.
HORIZONS is supported through fundraising efforts and corporate and private
donations.
HORIZONS has initiated a fund-raising drive, which has raised almost
$800 so far this year. Tax-deductible contributions can be sent to HORIZONS,
2111 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22201.
WID Seeks New Logo
The National Board of Directors of Women In Defense is soliciting
proposals for a designer to create three different logo options from which
it can select a favorite. "The goal is to update the logo to be more
dynamic and modern," said WID Secretary Heather Owens, of Versar,
Inc. Interested designers should submit a one-page proposal with the following
information: Name, contact information, a brief description of experience,
a date when three logo samples could be submitted and total payment needed
to complete the project. Keep in mind WID is a non-profit organization.
Proposals may be e-mailed to hmowens@yahoo.com.
Norma Byron, president of The Ashlawn Group, LLC, is president of Women
