WID to Hold its Annual Meeting on April 16

Women In Defense will hold its annual meeting and dinner on April 16, at the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va. The meeting will review and highlight WID's accomplishments for the year which ended on March 31.

At the meeting, the 2002-2003 national board of directors will be installed and the Distinguished Member of the Year will be announced. The keynote speaker will be Suzanne Patrick, deputy undersecretary of defense for industrial policy.

Picatinny Arsenal

WID leaders met in early March with professional women from Picatinny Arsenal, located in Dover, N.J. to encourage them to establish a local chapter. The luncheon meeting was sponsored by NDIA's Picatinny Chapter and Michael Devine, technical director of the U.S. Army's Tank-Automotive and Armament Command's Armament Research Development and Engineering Center.

Chapter Development

WID cultivates and supports the advancement and recognition of women in all aspects of national security. WID membership provides ready access to:

  • Opportunities for professional development.
  • A forum for exchanging ideas and experiences.
  • A vehicle for expanding networks.
  • Entree to distinguished government and industry officials in open discussions.
  • A source for scholarships and mentoring through the HORIZONS Foundation.

WID receives numerous inquiries from professional women in the national security field across the country about membership and how to form chapters. Responding to these requests, WID has designated responsibility for the development and encouragement of new chapters to its vice president.

The outgoing vice president, Julie Alford, said that she has seen an increased interest in WID during her term in office. "Clearly, WID's emphasis on professional development and networking is meeting the needs of more and more women in the national security field," she said.

To assist in the formation of new chapters, WID has developed a comprehensive chapter manual, which is available for downloading from its Web site at: wid.ndia.org. A chapter formation checklist is included, along with suggestions for chapter activities, a sample financial statement and model chapter by-laws.
